BIBLE STORIES

Wise men are very clever. They are able to look at the stars and know which direction they are travelling, just by watching the stars!

These three wise  men, called Balthazar, Caspar and Melchior, lived in the East. They looked up at the sky every night and wrote down everything that they saw. One night they saw a bright new star that they had never seen before. It was the brightest star in the sky. They were very excited.

After talking about it for a while, the three of them decided to follow this new star. They followed the star for miles and miles and miles. It led them to Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, King Herod who was the King of Judea had heard about the baby. He was rather upset. “I am the only King of Judea” he said.

The wise men realised that the star meant that there was a new king who had been born. They decided to follow it again. “It will lead us to where he is” they said. So that night the wise men carried on with their journey.

Herod’s Priests knew that a baby would be born in Bethlehem. They told Herod that the new king would one day rule over Israel. Herod didn’t like this very much. So he came up with a plan. He secretly sent for the wise men and when they came, he said to them to “Go to Bethlehem and search until you find the child. Then when you’ve found him, come back and tell me where he is so that I can go and worship him.”

So once again the wise men started off on their long journey. They followed the star. When the star stopped, they knew they’d found the right place. They tied up their tired camels and went inside the stable.

There was the baby Jesus, with Mary and Joseph. The wise men bowed down. They knew that this tiny baby was their King. They opened their bags and brought out some presents. These gifts were gold, frankincense and myrrh. They gave them to Jesus.

In a dream, God spoke to the wise men. He told them that Herod planned to hurt the baby. So instead of going to see Herod on their way home, the wise men decided to go a different way home.
