One day, quite late in the day, Jesus told his disciples to take a boat out and sail across Lake Galilee. They all got onboard. Jesus stayed on the shore and told them to sail across, saying that he would meet them on the other side of the lake. When they had set off, Jesus found a quiet place on top of a hill to pray to God.
Out on the lake, a storm was starting. It was night time now and very dark. The waves were bigger, crashing against the side of the boat. The disciples were getting scared as the boat became harder and harder to control.
Suddenly, they saw something coming towards them. The disciples rubbed their eyes to check that they were seeing. “Jesus is coming! And he's walking on water!” Then they started to get scared. “What if he’s a ghost!” they said.
Jesus called out to them from across the water. “Don’t be afraid. It’s me, Jesus.” The disciples weren't convinced. Peter spoke to Jesus, “If it really is you, let me come to you on the water.” Jesus replied “Come”.
So Peter climbed over the edge of the boat and stepped carefully onto the water. Amazing! He didn’t sink. Carefully he made his way towards Jesus, step by step, moving very slowly.
Peter got quite excited. “I can walk on water, too!” he thought to himself. Just then there was a gust of wind and a big wave made him look away from Jesus. He began to be afraid. He started to sink. “Help, Lord, save me!” Peter called out to Jesus. Jesus stretched his arm out to Peter, and offered him his hand. “Why did you get scared?” Jesus said.
Jesus helped him back up, and they headed back to the boat. Everyone looked up when they got back on the boat. The wind had died away and the lake was calm again. All the disciples turned to Jesus and worshipped him. |
