BIBLE STORIES

There was once a man called Jacob. He had many children. He loved them all, but the youngest, Joseph, was his favourite. So he made him a special long coat with sleeves. This made all of Joseph’s brothers jealous, and they didn’t speak to him.

Joseph liked to dream. One night he dreamed that all the wheat in the fields was bowing down to him. Another night he dreamt that all his brothers, the sun, the moon and all the stars bowed down to him. His brothers didn’t like him much for that!

One day when all of Joseph’s brothers were working in the fields, they plotted to kill him. Reuben, one of the brothers, had a better idea though. “We don’t need to kill him. All we need to do is take off his coat and throw him in a pit.” he said to his brothers. And so they did.

In fact, some men came past who were buying and selling things. This gave the brothers an even better idea. They pulled Joseph out of the pit and sold him to the salesmen! These men were on their way to Egypt.

Their father, Jacob, thought that Joseph was dead. He cried and cried for his lost son.

The salesmen sold Joseph to a rich Egyptian called Potiphar to be his slave. It was all going well because God was watching over Joseph and everything that he did. Potiphar was very pleased with Joseph, but his wife wasn’t so happy, and she caused lots of trouble by telling lies about Joseph. Joseph got into trouble and was thrown into jail.

One of the King of Egypt’s servants was also in prison. One night, he had a dream and the next day he told Joseph about it. Joseph thought for a moment and then explained the dream to the servant. “It means that the King will give you your job back in three days.” Three days later, Joseph was right. The servant was given his job back. “Don’t forget me” Joseph called out to him when he left.
