BIBLE STORIES

During his life, Jesus helped many people. He taught people about God and healed the sick. He always did what his father, God, wanted him to do. So when God wanted his son to go back home to Heaven, Jesus had to die.

Two days before the Passover festival, Caiaphas, a high Priest, called all the chief Priests and elders together. They didn’t like Jesus, as people seemed to take more notice of Jesus than they did of them. They planned to have Jesus arrested and killed. They decided that it would be done quickly and quietly, with no fuss, because people would be very angry if they found out about it.

Luckily for Caiaphas, one of Jesus’ chosen disciples was looking for some extra money. He agreed to work for Caiaphas and bring Jesus to the chief Priests. His would be paid thirty pieces of silver for doing this.

So when the day came to celebrate the Passover, Jesus told his disciples where they would all eat that evening. Jesus gave the disciples some instructions: “Go into the city and a man who is carrying a jar of water will meet you. He will lead you to a large upstairs room. That is where we will have our supper.”

Later in the day, the disciples and Jesus sat down in that upstairs room to eat their last supper together. While the disciples were sitting, Jesus got up and began to wash the feet of his friends. The disciples looked at each other, and wondered what was going on. They felt a bit embarrassed, but Jesus didn’t stop. He washed each disciple’s feet, apart from one person, Judas. He knew that Judas was going to betray him, by handing him over to the chief Priests.

While they were all watching, Jesus took some bread and broke it and gave each man a piece. “This is my body” he said. He then drank wine from a cup and then passed the cup to his disciples. “This is my blood. Remember me when you eat bread and drink wine like this.” he said as he passed the cup around.

At this point, the disciples knew that something was going to happen. It didn’t seem like everything was right. Jesus spoke to his friends. “One of you is going to betray me and I am going to die.” The disciples were very upset and afraid. “Is it I, Lord?” They each asked Jesus.

Judas, with his hard heart, was the only one who knew the terrible truth.
